San Francisco

Shaped by earthquakes, the natural water inlet, better known as San Francisco Bay, offered ideal protection for a Native American village, the earliest settlement.  Looking for an outpost the Spanish established the Presidio in the same area, housing a few hundred people. Discovery of Gold and Silver in the Sierra Nevada shaped this town in an ever growing metropolis. Generations of events, fires and earthquakes, wars, artistic, political and social change, and technology - shaped San Francisco from generation to generation, and shaped American history, making  "The City by the Bay"  an American landmark.

Visitors from all over the world visit the peninsula to witness its timeless monuments and absorb its atmosphere.  From the Golden Gate Bridge, a technological innovation, to the Cable Car that still rattles over the steep inclines, there's a happy medium between man-made and natural displays.   A colony of sea lions still occupies the docks near Pier 39, a shopping heaven for the visiting tourist.

On Fisherman's wharf, old canneries are home to art displays, souvenir shops and cozy restaurants, while street performers enhance the ambiance, and little enclaves as Chinatown or Little Italy, never lost the flavor of their origin.

In this condensed environment, where houses hug each other, it is still easy to find a green oasis.
Golden Gate Park stretches for miles and offers museums, sport activities, relaxation, even a Japanese Tea Garden.

Shopping area around Union Square and Market Street present world-renowned stores, while Montgomery Street is the financial capital of the west.

Tunnels, one-way street systems and underground transportation (Bart) offer smooth navigation while the famous bridge systems & ferries connect the peninsula across the Bay.

In the middle of the Bay,  Alcatraz, former penal colony, currently a National Park, still invites millions of visitors to take a peek at its past.

Known as the most liberal thinking town in the Nation, the free spirit still manifests itself in the many cultural events and art displays.  Many districts carry the memories of their cultural past;  Haight - Ashbury, is still regarded as the cultural revolutionary epicenter during the sixties and the Castro district is a proud display of renovation and rejuvenation  by the gay & lesbian community.
